The Catalyst Quest

Catalysts don't wait for perfect conditions. This week, you'll build a tiny marketplace and discover what happens when someone trusts you with responsibility.

Rebel Reality

Yvon Chouinard: The Climber Who Built Patagonia — Then Gave It Away

An illustration of a small climbing figure ascending a mountain peak at sunrise, with a tiny workshop tent at the base

When Yvon Chouinard was a teenager, he loved climbing mountains. He wasn't trying to become rich or famous; he simply wanted better climbing equipment. So he learned to make his own.

What started as one teenager solving a problem eventually became Patagonia, one of the world's most respected outdoor companies.

But what made Yvon a rebel wasn't just building a successful business. It was the way he led it.

He believed businesses should protect the planet, treat employees with respect, and create products that truly mattered. He encouraged people to think for themselves, challenge old ideas, and take responsibility for their work. In 2022, instead of selling Patagonia or leaving it to his family, he gave ownership of the company to a trust and nonprofit organization so that future profits could help fight climate change.

That's not a typical business story. It's the story of someone who decided success wasn't just about making money — it was about making a difference.

Who Trusted You With Real Responsibility?

"Don't wait for the right opportunity: create it."
— George Bernard Shaw, playwright and essayist

Think about a time when an adult trusted you with real responsibility.

  • 💭 How did it change the way you saw yourself?
  • 💭 What kind of responsibility would you like someone to trust you with next?
  • 💭 If you could create something that genuinely helped other people, what would it be — and why?

Build a Tiny Marketplace

🎯 Pack this skill · Leadership & Entrepreneurship Difficulty · ★★★☆☆ Time · 30–60 minutes Where · Indoors or outdoors Who · Solo, partner, family, or team Earns · ⚡ The Catalyst badge

Your challenge: imagine you've been given the same opportunity Mrs. S. gave our class. Create a small business or project that makes someone's day a little better. It could earn money… or it could simply create value. The goal isn't to become rich — it's to discover what happens when someone trusts you with responsibility.

Step 1 — Find a need

Look around your home, neighborhood, or school. Ask yourself:

  • What frustrates people?
  • What could be made easier?
  • What could be more fun?
  • What small problem could I help solve?

The best businesses begin by solving real problems.

Step 2 — Create your idea

Choose one — or invent your own:

  • Homemade bookmark
  • Greeting card
  • Bracelet or craft
  • Bake sale or lemonade stand (with an adult's support)
  • Dog walking
  • Plant watering
  • Book organization
  • Gardening or lawn care
  • Tutoring a younger student

Step 3 — Build your team

If you're working with others, decide who will:

  • Lead the project
  • Manage supplies
  • Create advertisements
  • Welcome customers
  • Keep track of money or tokens

Remember: good leaders don't do everything themselves. They help everyone contribute.

Step 4 — Reflect

When you're finished, ask yourself:

  • What decision was hardest?
  • What surprised me?
  • Did I listen well?
  • Did everyone feel included?
  • What would I change next time?

🔥 Reflecting Around the Fire

The best leaders don't tell people what to think. They create opportunities for people to think, lead, and solve problems for themselves.

Mrs. S. did exactly that. She didn't hand us a worksheet about business. She trusted us to build one.

Beginning Something Brand New

The Marketplace Isn't Just a Classroom

Today's marketplace isn't just a classroom. It's:

  • 🧵 Etsy
  • ▶️ YouTube
  • 🛍️ Shopify
  • ✉️ Substack
  • 💛 Patreon
  • 📷 Instagram

A twelve-year-old can start a business from a bedroom. But great businesses aren't built by tricking people — they're built by solving real problems.

Ask yourself: "What value am I creating?"

The Catalyst

Catalysts make things happen. They don't wait for perfect conditions. They notice possibilities, bring people together, and take the first step — even when they don't know exactly how things will turn out.

Confidence doesn't come before action. More often than not, confidence grows because of action. Wear this badge as a reminder that every project, every team, and every meaningful change begins with someone willing to say, "Let's give it a try."
